Flame Scallops of the family Limidae are peaceful omnivores from the Indo-Pacific region. Scallops are interesting to watch swim as they quickly open and close their shell to propel in a hopping motion to the other side of the tank. Their brightly colored plumes are used to intimidate predators and catch fine foods from the water. This scallop builds and embeds itself in a nest of small rock, and it filter-feeds on phytoplankton. It does best in a mature reef environment. It may be kept in groups, but feeding should be done individually by pipette with the pump turned off. Drip acclimation is recommended for all inverts to avoid rapid changes in water chemistry. Copper based medications can be fatal for inverts.
