Product Summary:

Hydor Performer Calcium Reactor 160

If you are looking for an ideal way to ensure calcium supplement for coralline algae or corals, the Hydor Performer Calcium Reactor 160 is the best solution. Perfect for today’s mini reef aquariums, this reactor features an easy-to-use set up that is designed to be used inside or outside a sump system. This calcium reactor also includes a Seltz water pump which helps to circulate water in the large reaction chamber, a drip counter that records the “pass through” flow rate, and a bubble counter that is designed for CO2 injection. The reactor also includes control valves which make it easy to regulate the calcium production. For added convenience, the unit has an open top chamber that makes it easy to add calcium media. This reactor features a sturdy construction and is designed with John Guest plumbing fittings which ensure that it stays in good condition for a long time.

Instructions:
Before operating the calcium reactor, make sure all tubes are correctly connected to avoid water leaks.

Place the calcium reactor near or inside your sump.
Open the lid of the reactor.
Load the reactor with calcareous material (follow the manufacturer's guide for rinsing instructions) following the levels shown in function of the material size. The use of very fine material or sand is not advisable.
Connect the CO2 system to the reactor, making sure the valve is positioned correctly.
Fill the bubble counter with reverse osmosis water.
Turn on the pump (not supplied) and fill the reactor with water.
When the reactor is full of water, turn the circulation pump on for a few seconds. Once the pump is turned off, release the air trapped inside the reactor using the air valve. Repeat 2 or 3 times or until you have removed all the air in the reactor. Please note that the supply pump must always remain on.
Close the valve. Note: The air valve should be used only at startup. When the reactor is in operation, you might see some CO2 where there was extra air at startup. If the CO2 continues to increase, it is a sign that you are using too much. In this case, you should reduce the amount of CO2 used without releasing the excess because the pump retrieves it via a venturi system.
At this point, you can begin injecting the CO2. Adjust the CO2 bubbles to about 1 every 2 seconds. Adjust the Drop Counter in order to obtain a very fast drip.
After 6-12 hours, check the values of the water dripping from the outlet and make the required adjustments to obtain correct ones to maintain a correct level of calcium and KH in the tank. The amount of water dripping from the reactor and the amount of CO2 introduced determine the values of the dripping water itself. For this reason, it is extremely important to set these two parameters correctly.
If the CO2 input is increased without increasing the water outlet flow, you will have a high concentration of calcium ions and bicarbonate in the water. Conversely, if the outlet flow is increased, but the CO2 is not, you'll have lower values of the outlet flow water. Increasing the water flow, maintaining the calcium and KH values means that you are introducing more calcium in the tank. The ideal value depends on the needs and the amount consumed by your aquarium inhabitants. Seek advice from a marine specialist or a specialist manual.
