Raccoon Butterfly (Chaetodon lunula)
Found in the Indo-Pacific region and named for its masked appearance, the Raccoon Butterfly fish (also known as the Masked or Bandit Butterfly) has a bold, arched band of black running over its eyes. Its body is golden yellow with black and white markings and oblique striping, though there are a few variations within the species; some have red markings as well. The body shape is oval to round and quite thin, thus giving it a flutter-like swimming style, reminiscent of a butterfly in flight. This hardy fish is a stunning choice for a fish-only tank and often becomes an aquarium favorite. It should be kept as an individual in a peaceful, roomy environment with plenty of live rock and places to hide. It is not recommended for reef tanks, as it will consume coral polyps and possibly ornamental anemones.
It typically accepts a variety of preparations for carnivores and meaty items (with clam being a particular favorite), but does better if also offered vegetable-based fare. When stressed, the Raccoon Butterfly may refuse to eat, and this may include its introduction to the tank. Soak food in garlic product or try live food to coax.
